There are tons of people that say playing sports is one of the best ways to get fit and you know what, they’re right! The one downside to some sports is that some of them only exercise certain body parts. Take running for instance. When a person runs their only targeting the major muscle groups in the legs which leaves the upper body out since it’s not being exercised. Professional runners usually have to go to the gym in order work out their chest, arms and shoulders as well. Or they take part in some other sport which targets the upper body in order to have a proportionate looking body. This is called cross-training. The simple definition is doing two activities that each target different body parts. Many professional athletes participate in this form of training in order to have proportioned muscle groups.
How is this type of training good?
If you play a sport every day then you would probably consider yourself physically fit. But if you don’t actively engage in cross training then you probably don’t target each muscle group as thoroughly as you should. If you are unsure about this try to play a sport that you haven’t done in a while.
If you enjoy riding your bike for a couple miles a day then your body is probably used to this exercise. Try swimming a mile or two one day for a change. After doing a new exercise or pushing your limits you may be sore the next day but don’t give up. However, if you went running it probably wouldn’t bother you. This is because your body is used to working out your legs from bicycling. Your upper body would be sore because you targeted a completely different group of muscles which weren’t used to getting this type of excercise. This has got to be the biggest benefit when it comes to this type of training. If you want a good looking and proportionate body then you should definitely try cross training.
Many professional athletes actively cross-train to stay fit and in good health. Let’s look at some more of the benefits of this type of training. First of all when you perform the same activities over and over again your body gets used to doing them. After long periods of time your muscles naturally get more efficient at performing these specific activities. This is why a soccer player may not necessarily be good at swimming or at another sport which takes a great deal of upper body strength. Once your muscles hit peak efficiency for a primary exercise they tend to require much more of this type of exercise to continue to get stronger. These muscles tend to maintain their current level of strength unless a lot more exercise is required of them after they hit their peak. Most athletes tend to do lots of different exercises which target different sections of the body. This allows them to strengthen every muscle in the body instead of targeting just one muscle group. But if you think that this is all that cross-training will do, then I’m happy to tell you that there are other additional benefits to it as well.
This type of training also reduces the chance of injuries due to repetitive muscle strain. When you overuse or strain certain muscle groups they become incredibly susceptible to injury. Cross training also allows someone to have better overall fitness when compared to a person that does not actively participate in this popular practice. It also helps to liven up your exercises. When most people do the same exercises over and over again they tend to eventually get bored of doing it. So what happens to these people? They usually stop participating in that particular exercise which is the worst thing to do. Another benefit from cross training is the fact that some exercises can help you increase stamina while others increase strength. Combined this would allow our runner to run faster and longer.
